Well, just arrived home after 5 days of flying over Outback Australia, WHAT A TRIP!!!! Everyone should do this, I have never seen the outback look like this in my 30 years of travel. Water laying everywhere from Roxby Downs to Bedourie. Saw the ferry on the Birdsville Track, the head of the flood between the Track and Lake Eyre, the Dig Tree, the Burke & Wills Bridge, the Eyre Creek northern crossing whch opened the day we flew over and flooding of the claypans either side of Big Red. Lake Eyre is 80% full, more than last year and they think the Cooper when it flows into it will make it overflow into Lake Eyre South, that has not occurred for a very long time. Will have photos in my gallery as soon as I overcome a glitch with my internet link??
They say the ferry will be operating for 8 months on the Track, not sure if that is the case, but i can conform the trip takes about 10-15 mins one way including laoding and unloading, no camper trailers or carvans though, only the 4WD will fit.
I have designed a trip out to see the Punt on the Cooper Creek across the Birdsville Track, the Cooper last crossed the Track in 1990, so here is your chance to see history in the making, if inetrested email me info@greatdividetours.com.au
I’ll be flying over Lake Eyre this Friday, then Coongie Lake/Innamincka on Saturday and the Cooper Creek where it crosses the Birdsville Track on Sunday, follow me via my SPOT tracking device, see the home page for the link. It’s going to be fantastic.
After the success of my 7 day trip I now have another 7 day trip planned for the north west of the Sth Island plus a fantastic weekend escape 2 day 4wd trip around Arhtur’s Pass, drop me an email if interested.
Last weekend we had 6 inches of rain and the Sholahaven was in flood (2 metres over the causeway) on Tuesday afternoon, meant a long deviation for me after 4 days of training (and clearing fallen trees off our tracks)!
Yep, its finally done it, its been 20 years since this last occurred. Flood waters have come down the Cooper Creek and crossed the Birdsville Track on Wedenesday 2 June 2010. I’m flying over it next weekend, and will provide a further report.
But if you want to take a drive out there to see this once in a 20 year event, let me know as I’ll be going by road soon.
Here we go again, I’ll be at the show over the weekend of 17-18 April, drop in at stand no. 248 and say Hi and get your new Outback Vic sticker and mouse mat! And here all about my NZ adventure, see you there!
Just arrived home from NZ and my 4WD trip around and over the Sth Island, WOW! If you want scenery and thrills you just have to do this with us next February! Nothing like driving up a vertical hill side with clear air beneath you for a 1000 metres!
Have you ever wished you could capture that amazing sunset or red sand dune as it really looks? I know I have. Great Divide Tours (GDT) is now offering 4WD/Photographic training weekends with one of Australia’s top photographers. The first course is in May and the second is in June. GDT already has 18 couples registered for these courses so more are being planned, if you are keen to learn exactly how to use your digital SLR whilst on a 4WD trip then send an email to Outback Vic via info@greatdividetours.com.au
There is a massive flood heading into the Darling River at present. The Paroo has isolated Hungerford and Wanaaring and this will be onging for several weeks. The flood waters coming down the Culgoa River, Warrego River and the Bokharu River all found between Enngonia and Lightning Ridge, will soon empty into the Darling. Floods around Bourke, Louth, Tilpa and Wilcannia are expected right through April, so if you are planning a trip along the Darling over Easter you may need to rethink your plans.
